The Honours program in Chemistry operates as a suite of four courses, which together are employed to produce a single final grade.

This course is composed of five formal lecture series that cover broad areas of current chemistry at an advanced level. Topics involved are in the areas of advanced materials, advanced methods of characterisation, advanced synthetic methods, computers in chemistry, and health and safety and quality assurance.

ObjectivesOn successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. to produce a flexible and skilled honours graduate with the capacity to compete and work professionally in a range of fields relevant to their training in any state or nation
2. to provide training which develops appreciation and understanding of both the methods and the processes of scientific investigation and their roles in the practice of chemistry in a social and commercial context
3. to provide advanced training in chemistry appropriate for registration and practice as a professional chemist and/or for pursing further research for a higher degree
4. to provide current and high-level practical and technical skills appropriate for the chemical practitioner in the modern workplace
5. to develop in graduates well-developed and appropriate skills for scientific practice and problem solving, including logical thinking, critical appraisal, analytical skills, organization and planning, development and presentation of logical arguments, skills in research, and skills in report writing and presentation
6. to provide training consistent with aims of the School, Faculty and University strategic plans
ContentThis course consists of five topic areas, each taught and examined independently:

1)Advanced Materials
a)relationship of molecular structure to macroscopic properties;
b)materials - e.g. kevlar, polyethylene, zeolites, graphite composites, ceramics, synthetic textiles.

2)Advanced Methods of Characterisation
a)spectroscopic methods of compound structure determination;
b)nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy - theoretical concepts, determination and manipulation of spectra, 2D-NMR, inorganic systems;
c)mass spectrometry - instrumentation, ICP-MS, GC-MS, ES-MS, MS-MS.

3)Advanced Synthetic Methods
a)molecular synthesis for organic and coordination chemistry;
b)heterocyclic systems;
c)macrocycles, molecular machines;
d)automated syntheses and combinatorial chemistry.

4)Computers in Chemistry
a)advanced data analysis using spreadsheets - linear and non-linear regression analysis applied to chemical systems;
b)introduction to Factor Analysis;
c)instrument interfacing.

5)Occupational Health and Safety and Quality Assurance
a)chemical safety issues - signs/labelling, legal obligations, occupational hygiene, chemical transportation, dangerous goods, hazardous/carcinogenic substances, Workcover;
b)quality assurance of chemical data from experiments, QA planning, statistics and control charts, sample and record handling, sampling and sample analysis, method validation, proficiency and check samples.

Assumed KnowledgeA major in chemistry in the basic undergraduate degree with an average in Level 300 chemistry subjects (or others assessed as equivalent by the Head of discipline) equivalent to a credit.
