Green Engineering and Sustainability Principles

Introduces the concepts of sustainability and cleaner production as applied in an industrial context. Basic principles of "Green Engineering" are also considered. The concept of "systems thinking" is also explored, particularly in the role of the engineer or scientist in developing suitable technologies. Environmental impact analysis is quantified through the use of life cycle analysis, and the methodology is placed in context with the broader issues of sustainability and cleaner production. Also discussed, are the philosophical issues related to sustainability and societal influences.

Objectives1. Develop a thorough understanding of the concepts of Sustainability and Cleaner Production, and the challenges that engineers and scientists face in applying these concepts in an industrial and societal context.
2. Understand the meaning of 'systems thinking".
3. Introduce the concept of cleaner production and how to apply it to real life applications.
4. Introduce the basic principles of Green Engineering, as applied to product design and manufacturing processes.
5. Introduce the concept of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Life Cycle Impact Analysis (LCIA), and the basic principles underlying the methodology.
6. Provide an understanding of the benefits and limitations of LCA and LCIA.
7. Develop a medium level capability in using LCA and LCIA packages, as demonstrated by the solution of a typical engineering problem. Apply this capability to practical industrial and community problems through a range of case studies and showcase examples.
8. Be able to present clear arguments to support the findings of analysis undertaken as part of case studies presented as projects.
