Description
Develops research techniques and ability to work individually on a problem. The student and academic supervisor (frequently an industrial sponsor is involved) establish the objectives and expected outcomes of the research project, which is then pursued by the student under the guidance of the supervisor(s).

Multi-term sequence
This course is part of a multi-term sequence. Both Part A and Part B must be completed to meet the requirements of the sequence. Part A and Part B must be completed in consecutive terms. Students must complete Part A before completing Part B. Students must complete the sequence within a twelve month period. If students complete Part A but are unable to complete Part B within the timeframe, they must re-enrol in Part A. Part A cannot be completed as a standalone course, it will only count towards your program once you have successfully completed Part B.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the course students will be able to:
1. Carry out a major research project in the field of process technology.
2. Develop research techniques such as literature reviews, evaluations of previous work in the area.
3. Demonstrate the ability to independently perform primary research activities (experiments, numerical modelling, etc.)
4. Produce a major written report for their project, including bibliographic referencing.
5. Present a major piece of research as an item of professional communication (written or oral).
Content
- Undertake a risk assessment related to their proposed research activities.
- Develop a research proposal after discussions with the supervisor and consult relevant literature on the topic of the research.
- Prepare a plan of experimental or computer work and carry this out, with modifications as the results of the work progress.
- Give presentations based on the research activities undertaken.
- Submit a Final Research Report which incorporates the results and conclusions of the research carried out in a scientific, logical and ordered manner.
In certain projects, experimental equipment is designed and developed by the student.

Compulsory Placement and WHS Requirements:
- WHS Requirement - Students must complete a Workplace Safety Induction or Risk Assessment. - WH & S Laboratory Safety Induction. In order to participate in this course, students must complete a compulsory safety induction. See course objectives 1 and 3. Alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis with the Laboratory Manager.
