Chemical Engineering Research Project Part B

Description

Develops research techniques and ability to work individually on a problem. The student and academic supervisor (frequently an industrial sponsor is involved) establish the objectives and expected outcomes of the research project, which is then pursued by the student under the guidance of the supervisor(s).

Learning Outcomes

1. To carry out a major research project in the field of process technology.

2. To develop research techniques like literature reviews, evaluations of previous work in the area.

3. To develop the ability to work individually on a problem.

4. To enhance the report writing abilities and bibliographic referencing of the student.

5. To further develop the ability to present a major piece of research as a short summary -type seminar.

Content

Each student is required to:

  1. Develop a research proposal after discussions with the supervisor and consulting relevant literature on the topic of the research.
  2. Prepare a plan of experimental or computer work and carry this out, with modifications as the results of the work progress.
  3. Submit a Final Research Report which incorporates the results and conclusions of the research carried out in a scientific, logical and ordered manner.

In certain projects, experimental equipment is designed and developed by the student.

Multi-term Sequence

This course is part of a multi-term sequence. Both Part A and Part B must be completed to meet the requirements of the sequence. Part A and Part B must be completed in consecutive terms. Students must complete Part A before completing Part B. Students must complete the sequence within a twelve month period. If students complete Part A but are unable to complete Part B within the timeframe, they must re-enrol in Part A.

This course replaces the following course(s): CHEE4971. Students who have successfully completed CHEE4971 are not eligible to enrol in CHEE4971B.

Requisites

The 'A' component of this Multi-Term Sequence Course must be taken prior to enrolment in the 'B' component.

Assumed Knowledge

Completion of all Year 1-3 courses.

  • Individual Supervision: Induction Requirement - Students must attend and pass the induction requirements before attending these sessions. - In order to participate in this course, students must complete a compulsory safety induction. See course objectives 1 and 3. Alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis with the Laboratory Manager.

Course Assessment Requirements:

  • Presentation: Attempt / Submission Requirement - Students must attempt/submit this assessment item to pass the course. - In order to complete this course students must participate in timetabled workshops and oral presentations. See course objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Details of the assessment criteria for participation will be given in the Course Outline and distributed via Blackboard. Alternative arrangements to be made on a case-by-case basis with the Course Coordinator.
