Chemical Engineering Design Project Part A

This course is Part A of a multi-term sequence. Part B must also be completed immediately after Part A.
Students prepare a design for a chemical engineering process which includes aspects related to equipment, location costs and regulatory issues. The design report resulting is equivalent to a feasibility study. Students work in groups, with the objective of establishing communication skills and will need to make deadlines, 'engineering' decisions, perhaps for the first time, and yet must recognise the effect of uncertainties in their decisions on the viability of the design.

|Objectives||1. To design a chemical process.|
2. To develop appreciation of aspects related to equipment, location costs and regulatory issues.
3. To apply chemical engineering knowledge and project management skills into real situations.
4. To promote professional characteristics and team work activities.
5. To produce a design report equivalent to a feasibility study.
|Content||Each group is required to:|
1. Prepare a preliminary flow sheet with reasoned (including economic) arguments for the scheme selected and a complete work program.
2. On the basis of the preliminary flow sheet, carry out a chemical engineering design of the proposal in sufficient detail for the preparation of capital and operating costs, and an estimate of the return on the investment.
3. Submit a consolidated design project report. This will be comprised of individual student submissions and will include:
a) A process flow diagram;
b) Material and energy balances, with graphical presentation;
c) Instrumentation and control systems;
d) Materials handling;
e) An operating procedure;
f) Plant layout and simplified 3 dimensional model;
g) Detailed design of a major process component (from each individual student);
h) A summary of possible hazards and safety requirements;
i) An outline of the selected site, with consideration of economic and environmental factors;
j) Construction schedules;
k) Capital and operating costs, and the return on investment.
The work program is structured into the following phases with deadlines for submission of each phase.
Phase 1. Complete preliminary process design including flowsheet, approximate mass and energy balance, selection of unit operations, preliminary economics, and work program for completion of the Project. The report stands as Appendix A of the final report.
Phase 2. Completion of final process design and drafts of individual unit operation designs. These reports will stand as Appendix B for the process design and Appendices C, D etc. for individual designs of the final report.
Phase 3. Completion of balance of design report, operating procedure, site selection, construction schedule, plant layout, operating procedure, economic evaluation and completion of executive summary. Submission of draft report.
