Introduces students to experimental aspects of a number of areas of Chemical Engineering. Both fundamental aspects, such as kinetics and reaction engineering, process control, heat and mass transfer and fluid flow as well as more applied topics will be covered. The course will not only serve to reinforce fundamental principles of chemical engineering, but also to the application of the technology. It will emphasise and help reinforce topics and principles introduced in lectures, and help students gain better "hands-on" experience in the laboratory and with practical work in general. In addition it will help develop report-writing skills and the ability to critique experimental data and techniques.

Objectives Course Objectives
1. To help develop an understanding of the fundamental principles underlying chemical engineering through practical experimentation
2. To understand issues related to experimental aspects of chemical engineering
3. To establish expertise relevant to the practice of engineering
4. To develop management skills related to planning, developing and report writing activities
5. To develop some understanding of the professional obligations related to the discipline of engineering, with a special emphasis of the development of safe working practices during laboratory exercises
Content Students operate in small groups, but submit separate written reports, with each experiment taking between one and three weeks to complete. The report formats will be specified by the academic in charge. The following experiments are indicative of those that may be covered in this course.

1. Packed and fluidised bed behaviour in a solid-liquid system
2. Mass transfer from falling liquid drops
3. An analysis of simple liquid mixing
4. A study of binary distillation in a packed column
5. Flotation kinetics of an ore
6. Reaction kinetics in a tubular flow reactor
7. Stirred tank power studies
8. Water softening and ion exchange

Compulsory Components

Participation in Laboratory Sessions. In order to complete this course students must participate in timetabled laboratory sessions. See Course Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
