This course will introduce you to a number of principles and concepts that are fundamental to chemical engineering. The course gives real-life examples of process industries to provide you with the context engineering in practice. As part of this course you will also be given training in producing technical drawings such as piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), and provided with an introduction to safe workshop practice.
| Objectives | 1. Introduce first year students to fundamental chemical engineering concepts and principles. 2. Develop safe workshop procedures and skills, and demonstrate the correct use of basic hand tools. 3. Produce piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) and other technical drawings to an acceptable standard using AutoCAD P&ID, Visio and/or similar packages. 4. Improve written communication skills. 5. Develop problem solving skills and encourage decision making. |

| Content | 1. Correct use of units, unit conversions, and unit analysis, when performing complex engineering-based calculations. 2. Material and energy balances as applied to engineering situations. 3. Industrial examples of chemical engineering principles in practice. 4. The use of computer programs such as Visio, AutoCAD P&ID or similar packages to produce technical drawings, for example piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID). 5. Workshop practice; including machining experience, welding, fabrication, and practical exercises involving assembly, installation and operation of typical process plant equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, heat exchangers and gearboxes. |
