Writing for Performance

This course focuses on the role of the writer in the performance process. It explores the features of different genres and styles of performance--from naturalistic playscript to multimedia performance and film. It examines ways in which the different performance media--eg. live, radio, film, novels--affect the performance writer's work. Students explore these issues through researching and examining samples of performance writing of others as well as through developing their own original work.

Objectives Upon the completion of this course, students will be expected to demonstrate:
1. Knowledge and understanding of the role of the writer in various performance contexts
2. Knowledge and understanding of the theoretical issues and discourses relating to performance and performance writing
3. Knowledge and understanding of the structures, forms and features of different types and styles of performance writing
4. Skills in writing in various performance contexts
5. Skills in the processes and practices of writing for performance
Content * Theoretical perspectives underpinning writing for performance--e.g. Communication theories, semiotic theories, narrative theories
* The role of the writer in various performance contexts--e.g. the playwright and the screen writer
* The "auteur": issues of author-ship and authority in performance contexts
* Relationship between words, images, the performer's body and voice and the context and medium of performance
* Structures and features of a range of texts for performance
* Skills, processes and practices of writing for performance in a range of contexts
Replacing Course(s) ARTC3490 Writing for Performance.
Transition Students who have successfully completed ARTC3490 Writing for Performance may not enrol into CAPA3490 Writing for Performance.
