Alerts students to the range of modes available to contemporary audiences and used by contemporary practitioners both in Australia and overseas, thereby enabling students to build on their understanding of theatre practices introduced in second year.

Objectives

i. To develop an understanding of contemporary performance practices with particular emphasis on Australian cultural contexts.
ii. To develop research skills in the performing arts.
iii. To develop an ability to read and understand the key dramatic and performance texts.
iv. To develop written and performative fluency in the expression of students' understanding and research skills.

Content

Close studies of particular modes of contemporary performance in relation both to their generic background and to their cultural contexts. The subject matter reflects staff availability but it may include content areas drawn from the following:
avant garde performance
aspects of gender and performance
contemporary theatre critics and audiences

Students who have successfully completed ARTC3480 Body, Performance and Culture may not enrol into CAPA3480 Body, Performance and Culture.

Assessment Items

Essays / Written Assignments	Essay one, 1,500 words - 35%.
Essays / Written Assignments	Essay two 1,500 words - 35%.
Other: (please specify)	Presentation one - 15% Presentation two - 15%. Participation is assessed on the basis of active and positive involvement in the subject, demonstrating steady progress within its framework, complying with workload expectations and submitting required work on time. These include a participation component. The Department believes that assessment procedures especially at third year level should target both written and oral presentation skills. Therefore, the seminar may involve a component incorporating performance, the facilitation of a group project or other activity which requires the student to demonstrate an understanding of face-to-face presentation skills. In order to pass the subject, students are expected to show proficiency in both written and oral modes of presentation.
