Performance Histories 1

10 Units 3000 Level Course

Offers the opportunity to explore aspects of major performance styles, forms and traditions within an historical framework taking into consideration the social and cultural contexts that shaped them. Students will examine ways in which performance traditions are adapted and appropriated in other contexts. There will be a particular focus on the performance traditions of non-naturalistic theatre, including Shakespearean performance styles and conventions.

1. Active participating in all the assigned exercises and tasks. Participation is assessed on the basis of demonstrated active and positive involvement in the subject's activities, demonstrated steady progress within its framework, compliance with workload expectations and the submission of required work on time. Recommended reading is made available prior to the commencement of classes and is supplemented during the semester. Weighting - 30%

2. Small group presentation. Students will be required to make a group presentation on an aspect of a performance style, form or tradition that they have researched through the literature and through the active exploration of appropriate scripts or other performance history documentations. Weighting - 35%

3. Individual research proposal. This proposal will allow students to explore a particular aspect of performance history through both documented sources and practical performance based research. Students will undertake some preliminary research to identify an area for further in-depth research. Weighting - 35%.
