Exposes students to contemporary areas of debate in the visual arts in relation to the Body and the Environment. Themes discussed will include the body in installation, ritual and performance art, photography and environmental art. Emphasis will be placed on the employment of critical theories but will be applied to contemporary art with a focus on the work of Australian artists.

Objectives By the end of the course the student will:
* be aware of current debates in the contemporary artworld
* be able to articulate an understanding of contemporary theories, incorporating their own artistic practice
* have acquired specialised knowledge of a selected aspect of art theory.

* The role of ritual in contemporary art
* The male body in contemporary art theory
* The visual arts and the eroticisation of violence
* Photography and the body
* The body in installation and performance
* Technology and the body
* Land art and ecology
Replacing Course(s) ARTC3000 Body and Environment
Transition Students who have successfully completed ARTC3000 Body and Environment may not enrol into CAPA3000 Body and Environment.

Assumed Knowledge It is desirable that students have successfully completed 2000 level courses in the Bachelor of Fine Art degree or related Arts courses and are competent in essay writing skills.

Essays / Written Assignments 2500 word essay 50% of total assessment
Presentations - Tutorial 20 minute oral presentation and accompanying 1500 word paper. 40% of total assessment
