This course introduces areas that are fundamental to the Creative and Performing Arts, including Theatre, Performance, Drama, Visual Arts and Sound in a variety of contemporary cultural contexts. The course introduces an overview to 20th and 21st century aesthetics and forms and some of their precedents, approaches to the use of space, place and time in performance-making and art, processes of collaboration and basic approaches to constructing events, performances, and artworks using sound, gesture, text and image.

Objectives At the successful completion of this course, students will demonstrate:

1. A basic critical appreciation of the relationship between words, texts, sounds, images, space and gesture.
2. The ability to identify the stages and benchmarks of the collaborative process.
3. An overview of 20th and 21st century developments in the arts.
4. The ability to create works involving words, texts, sounds, images, space and gesture.
5. Foundational written and oral communication skills
Content In this course students will investigate:

1. Exemplary aesthetic works that explore the intertextual relationship between words, texts, sounds, images, space, and gesture.
2. Analysis of the pre-eminent 20th and 21st century theories and philosophies for creating aesthetic performances/events/artworks.
3. Foundational experience in the collaborative processes of the creative and performing arts.
