This course is only available to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Biotechnology degree program.
This course examines the analysis of biomolecules. The focus is on using molecular technologies to address current issues. In particular applications in the areas of plant biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals will be discussed. Questions to be addressed include: How are genes cloned? How is plant genetic engineering accomplished? What are the current applications of plant biotechnology? What are the current approaches to the development of drugs? What approaches can be taken to large scale screening of biological compounds for commercial applications?
|Objectives||On successful completion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate:
1. An understanding of the applications of molecular biology.
2. An understanding of the production of transgenic plants for commercial applications.
3. Skills and Understanding of the critical analysis and appraisal of molecular based data.
4. An appreciation for agricultural, industrial, and pharmaceutical applications of molecular techniques.
|Content||1. Nucleic acids: structure, isolation and manipulation;
2. DNA based libraries;
3. Plant transformation mechanisms;
4. Applications of transformation for plant improvement;
5. The drug discovery cycle;
6. Drug delivery: Pharmacokinetics;
7. Product development.
|Assumed Knowledge||An understanding of BIOL1001 is assumed. In particular an understanding of DNA theory and Mendelian genetics as introduced in BIOL1001 is assumed. Concurrent or prior knowledge of BIOL2050 is strongly recommended.|
