This course will be delivered in 3 modules of 4 weeks duration. The course is designed to provide extensive training in the laboratory practices associated with biological research. Module 1 will focus on enzymes and biochemical reactions; Module 2 will focus on the chemistry of DNA; and Module 3 will focus on Immunochemistry and its application to biological research. BIOL2001 will be a core course for Bachelor of Biotechnology and for a Biological Sciences major in Bachelor of Science.

In order to participate in this course, students must complete a compulsory Workplace Health and Safety requirement. Students will receive full information on this compulsory course component in the course outline provided by the school.

Objectives On successful completion of this course, students will consolidate their understanding of:

1. biological terminology and concepts in experimental biology
2. the ability to implement a working knowledge of the scientific method and philosophy
3. experimental design
4. the fundamental skills in the collection, processing and interpretation of biological information
5. the ethical conduct in learning and research
6. the hazard recognition and minimisation in safe biological investigation

And demonstrate:
1. an ability to use experimental apparatus
2. the ability to work in a team
3. critical and ethical thinking and the scientific approach
4. writing and data presentation skills
5. the ability to perform calculations required for understanding and interpreting experimental outcomes.
Content Through undertaking scientific experiments in biology at the cellular and subcellular level including biochemistry, molecular biology and immunochemistry, students will be exposed to the theory and practice of:

- The scientific method and philosophy of science
- Experimental design, hypothesis testing & problem solving
- Occupational health & safety Laboratory
- Molecular laboratory skills
- Slide preparation & microscope usage
- Use of selected Measurement Instruments
- Fundamentals of aseptic technique
- Use of Lab books to organise and document experimental details and results
- Data analysis, interpretation and presentation
- Report Writing
o Effective use of Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion format
o Referencing
o Computer publishing skills
- Working in teams
- Ethics, Academic and personal/professional integrity
Replacing Course(s) The students enrolled in the B Biotech program currently take BIOL3050, Immunology, 10 units, in their second year, and BSc students take it in their 3rd year. This new course will provide a replacement this course.
