The aim of this course is to facilitate the development of fundamental design skills through the exploration of architectural concepts and processes. It seeks to develop the student's powers of observation, description, analysis and imagination. Primary architectural concepts of private and public places and people are integrated around the notion of 'play' and presented through various representation modes.

Objectives At the end of the semester, the student should be able to do the following:

Think creatively and solve problems imaginatively
Define problems and formulate strategies for action
Collate information and apply analysis and critical judgment
Develop understanding of processes of teamwork and collaboration.
Develop architectural knowledge and professional literacy through comprehension of key architectural ideas sufficient to communicate their design proposal.
Content The content of the Architecture 1A Studio includes:
Play, Place and People: The individual, the context, and the collective
Description and Analysis: Existing designed objects - interaction between people and making imagination, inspriation and representation: Architectural composition and the innovative brief

The content of the Design Studies Module, integrated into Architecture 1A, includes:
Aspects of design
Problem solving models
Sketch design procedures and case studies
Planning strategies
Design of the envelope: factors and case studies
Ideas of form and function
Introduction to concepts of proportion and scale in architecture
Formative ideas in plan to section relationships
