This course provides students with the opportunity to broaden their educational experience through participation in an organised, international activity, such as an archaeological dig, an authorised tour, workshop, master class or a series of lectures from a recognised institute.

Students must obtain approval from their Program Convenor prior to enrolment.

Objectives At the end of this course, students will be able to:
* Plan and organise a study within the context of an international experience.
* Demonstrate their gaining of knowledge and insights obtainable only through an overseas study experience
* Speak and write, where relevant, with confidence about overseas sites, artefacts, working procedures, operations, et cetera.
* Use pictorial or technical and journal writing techniques to record and reflect on their overseas study experience.
Content By travelling overseas to participate in organised tours, digs, lecture series and/or workshops, students will engage in a range of activities related to their professional development in their fields of study. Students will be expected to participate in all aspects of their overseas experience, and they will undertake any academic and professional tasks set for them by their teachers and/or directors on-site, as well as any duties imposed upon them by the course co-ordinator at the University of Newcastle.

Assumed Knowledge It will be assumed that students undertaking tours, digs, lecture series and/or workshops overseas will have completed at least 20 credit points in their chosen field of study.

Essays / Written Assignments Assignment 1 - Preparatory Portfolio or reflective journal - Due 3 weeks prior to departure

1. The preparatory portfolio or journal is to include research materials (drawings or notes), designed to prepare the student for the particular overseas experience, such as will be relevant to all places, sites and/or objects to be visited during the overseas component of the course. Such material should reflect upwards of at least 7 hours of effort.
2. In addition, the student must submit two papers of ca 300 words each: the first to reflect upon the anticipated significance of the forthcoming trip to the student's professional development; and the second to reflect upon the anticipated benefit of the trip for the understanding of the field of study.
The portfolio or journal is to take the form of an A4 size pdf document submitted via Turnitin and must be professional in appearance.

Assignment 2 - Final Portfolio or reflective journal - Due within 3 weeks of the end of the organised component of the overseas programme.

1. The completed portfolio or journal is to include original material, done on-site by the student (illustrations and/or notes) of places, objects and or lectures encountered during the period overseas. These drawings and/or notes should reflect upwards of 14 hours of effort.
2. In additional, the student must submit two papers: the first (ca 500 words) to reflect upon the significance of the trip to the student's professional development; and the second (ca 1000 words) to discuss the impact of specific sites, artefacts and events on the student's understanding of a subject of study. The latter should be included within the portfolio or reflective journal, perhaps in the form of captions.
3. The preparatory portfolio or journal should also be enlarged to include new data gathered on site. It is expected that minor corrections will be made to such data as it was previously recorded in the preparatory work.
The portfolio or journal is to take the form of an A4 size pdf document submitted via Turnitin and must be professional in appearance.

Compulsory Components
Compulsory Course Component OHS-Safety Induction or Risk Assessment. Each student must address the issues of Risk Assessment for the proposed programme of overseas study. In the first instance, the student must be fully acquainted with all material supplied by the University of Newcastle concerning the risks associated with travel and periods spent overseas (See on-line RA forms found at http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/health-safety/workplace-safety/managing-health-safety-risk/risk-assessment-training-tool.html).
Secondly, each proposed programme must be accompanied by a detailed Risk Assessment, developed by the course co-ordinator in conjunction with the student/s involved, with final authorisation for this part of the overseas period of study to be given by the RA officer of the UoN.
