Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Provide an introductory knowledge of Greek and Roman literature at 1000 level.
2. Increase knowledge of some of the major authors, works and genres from ancient Greece and Rome and to promote familiarity with the cultures that produced them.
3. Foster understanding of the critical methodologies and theories entailed in studying literature.
4. Promote skills in critiquing ancient literature.

Students will be introduced to key Greek authors and works such as Homer's Odyssey, Hesiod's Theogony, Lyric Poets (e.g. Sappho), Greek Playwrights (e.g. Euripides) as well as Roman literature such as Lyric Poets (e.g. Catullus), Roman Epic (Virgil's Aeneid and Ovid's Metamorphoses) in addition to selections from both Greek and Roman historical writings.
