AHIS1000 ANCIENT GREECE examines the history of Greece from the Bronze Age to the end of the Persian Wars in the 5th Century BC. The course content is examined through literary and archaeological evidence. This introductory compulsory course prepares students for the compulsory courses at 2000 and 3000 levels as well as providing an introduction to other courses in the Ancient History major, including other courses at 1000 level. It also provides a historical and literary complement to the study of Classical Languages.

Objectives 1. To provide students with an introductory knowledge of Ancient Greek history
2. To instruct and support an understanding of the changing conditions of Greek society and to explore and nurture an understanding of a culture other than one's own
3. To promote information accumulation in one area of the discipline and to do so via discipline-specific processes, including an awareness of the ethical issues and standards within the discipline
4. To encourage critical thinking and the expression of the same through assessment tasks that provide avenues for creative problem solving, locating, evaluating and using relevant information, teamwork, technological illiteracies as well as oral and written communication competencies
5. To enhance student competency regarding oral communication of knowledge of Ancient Greek history, including ethical sensitivity (including an awareness of ethical issues and standards within the discipline) and intercultural awareness (respect for and understanding of cultures other than one's own)

Other: (please specify) 3 of the 12 weeks will require attendance for successful completion of assessment tasks either directly (delivery and submission) or indirectly (acquiring skills to undertake assessment tasks):
• one session on specific instruction in information literacy research skills, which will be followed up with an assessment task worth 5% of the overall final grade;
• one session on specific instruction in academic essay writing, aimed at enhancing written skills for assessment submissions;
• one specific session in which students will present a tutorial paper and be assessed on oral contribution and written work worth 30% of the overall final grade
