According to the New South Wales Aboriginal Education Policy: "New South Wales Government policies continue to work towards achieving improved learning outcomes for Aboriginal people. The New South Wales Government is committed to achieving Reconciliation and recognises that appropriate education is fundamental to this process" (1996:1)
In 1989 The National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Policy was endorsed by the NSW Government. This policy aimed to achieve equity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in education with the foundation of the policy being the involvement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in decision-making processes. However the latest statistics reveal that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children still continue to have the highest attrition rate of all groups attending schools in NSW. Policies are still being inadequately implemented and governments seem reluctant to provide the necessary funding which could bring about change.
| Objectives | The objectives of this course are to: 1. critically analyse past education policies and consider their impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. 2. achieve a working knowledge of the processes involved in government funding for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education programs 3. understand strategies for practical implementation of education policies within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander context. 4. develop an understanding on the processes used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to negotiate appropriate futures 5. develop an understanding of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander world view |
