Health Equity for Indigenous Australians Closing the Gap

This course is designed to provide future health service providers with a comprehensive understanding into current issues, status and policy toward bridging the gap in health inequity experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The course examines the current health inequities in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in remote, rural and urban settings. Students will explore the principles underlying health inequity and policy direction as a priority of the Federal Government aim of Closing the Gap.
| Objectives | On completion of this course students will develop: 1. An understanding of current Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health inequities and associated social disadvantages. 2. An analytical understanding of health policy and practice at a state and national level. 3. An understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health services within the overall policy of access. 4. An analytical understanding of fundamental theories of poverty and ill-health. 5. A range of academic skills in relation writing, oral presentation, critical thinking, research and analysis. |

| Content | Students will explore the principles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health inequities in a variety of settings, including remote, rural and urban sectors of Australia. A range of health problems including alcohol and substance misuse, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and mental health problems will be explored to highlight health policy. | ||||||
