Abor Health:Causes & Burden of Ill Health

Provides an overview of the major causes of mortality and morbidity for Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Specific health issues affecting Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples will be explored including the nature, significance and the factors contributing to the cause of each of these specific health issues. The significance of Community empowerment in the healing process will be discussed as a health prevention strategy.

Objectives The specific objectives for this subject are outlined as follows:
1. Identify the major causes of illness and disease that impact on Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.
2. Analyse the nature, significance, cause and etiology of selected causes of illness and disease.
3. Identify prevention strategies utilised to address the poor health status of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
4. Demonstrate effective communication skills through oral and written tasks
5. Evaluate student learning and to develop strategies that will enhance studentlearning outcomes
Content The course will cover the following:
? The prevalence of CVD, diabetes, renal disease, otitis media, mental health, and suicide in Aboriginal communities
? The nature, significance and the impact of CVD, diabetes, renal disease, otitis media, mental health, and suicide on Aboriginal peoples
? The relationship between health and Community empowerment
? Culturally appropriate intervention strategies for specific health problems.
? Contributing factors affecting the health status of Aboriginal peoples.
Replacing Course(s) This subject is replacing the Nutrition & Food Strand Elective ABOR218 of the Bachelor of Aboriginal Studies. This elective does not replicate nor impose on other faculties' offerings.
Transition No student will be affected by the introduction of this new subject. The Nutrition & Food Strand was cancelled due to low enrolment numbers. There are no continuing students enrolled in this Strand.

Assumed Knowledge Students need a basic understanding of Aboriginal society equivalent to ABOR1210 or ABOR1110. ABOR1340, Aboriginal Health, Past and Present and ABOR1350, Aboriginal Health Practices, or equivalent are also recommended.
