Designed to increase the base level knowledge and understanding of the most effective means of communication with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their communities. The course covers an introduction of communication processes from traditional to contemporary situations. Processes surrounding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander protocols, decision making, community management, communication styles including verbal, non-verbal, graphical, performance are studied The course also extends its exploration into the images of Aborigines in contemporary media. The course utilises oration and talking circle*.

* Talking circles are designed to promote knowledge sharing as a collaborative venture and are not dissimilar to tutorials.

Objectives The course objectives are to:
1. Improve communication with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
2. Create an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communication practices and protocols
3. Appreciate the diversity of communication styles
4. Understand the role of media communication impact on decolonisation
Content The course covers:
? Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communication styles from traditional to contemporary
? Understanding and acknowledgement of diversity of cultural protocols
? Introduction to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages
? Exploration of oral, non-verbal, song, dance, art and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artifacts and communication tools
? Role of media communication image in decolonisation
Replacing Course(s) Course replaces ABOR124 Communication Studies II. This course replaces an existing course and will have no effect on offerings by other Faculties/Departments.
Transition Students failing to complete existing course ABOR124 can enrol directly into new course as revised course provides similar content base. Students who have successfully completed ABOR124 may no enrol in ABOR142.

Assumed Knowledge ABOR1410 or equivalent background in Aboriginal or Indigenous studies and/or experiences.
