The course is an introduction to life and culture of the Indigenous sea-faring people of the northern most tip of Australia, the Torres Strait Islander people. The course will cover from before invasion of the local traditional islander communities to contemporary Torres Strait Islander affairs and situation.
| Objectives | * To develop basic understanding of Torres Strait Islander culture and lifestyle to assist in capacity to work productively with these peoples * To develop student's capacity for critical thinking, debating and political awareness. * To enhance written and oral communication to enhance scholarly ability * To encourage and develop comparative analytical skills. * Critical examination of policy and practices and their impact on Torres Strait Islander peoples as they relate to current social and economic considerations * Demonstration and understanding of social justice and advocacy |
