Multi-Media Sculpture

Consolidates the student's knowledge of the broad range of techniques and processes of contemporary Sculpture practice and offers opportunity for students to expand this knowledge through the use of traditional and contemporary processes. New technologies provide opportunities for experimentation and creative expression within a contemporary framework. Sculpture experiences will embrace historical, theoretical, technical and conceptual dimensions. The course aims to build on the student's knowledge of moulding and casting processes, projects are linked to 3-D Art concepts and philosophy.

Objectives
1. To consolidate and extend technical knowledge and practical skills;

2. To highlight opportunities for creative expression using various moulding, casting, modelling, carving and assembly processes;

3. To provide an opportunity for students to expand 3-D concepts to encompass multi-media approaches to Sculpture;

4. To establish the foundation of sound approaches to visual research and documentation;

5. To facilitate experimentation within various multi-media and interdisciplinary 3-D practice;

6. To encourage independent self-directed attitudes to 3-D investigation.
Content
Topics may include:
1. Modelling in clay and wax, pattern making;

2. Foundry practice;

3. Mould making and preparation, waste moulds, production moulds, rubber moulds, refractory moulds;

4. Lost wax casting, traditional ludo, ceramic shell, various refractors;

5. Sand casting: chemical and traditional;

6. Casting in bronze and aluminium;

7. Carving in timber, stone and plaster;

8. Assemblage in timber, steel and mixed media;

9. Experimentation in NEW and non-conventional technologies;

10. From original to reproduction;

11. Drawing;

12. Presentation of artworks;

13. Performance and sound based sculpture;

14. The home studio;

15. Research and documentation;

16. Health and safety.
