Analysis of the Visual Image

Presents an investigation of the specific nature of the visual image as a form of representation and communication. To give coherence to the diverse theoretical source material presented, this study will follow the broad theme of the relationship between words and pictures, with emphasis on the debate over the conventional versus the natural image. A degree of specialisation is encouraged across the scope of painting, prints, photography, popular imagery and the digital image. Web delivery option.

Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students will:

(1) acquire an understanding of contemporary theories related to the perception and interpretation of visual images;

(2) gain skills in visual analysis;

(3) develop a critical awareness of the sophistication of contemporary visualisation.
Content The following broad themes or topics will be developed:

1. Natural versus Conventional image;

2. Perception and perspective;

3. Semiotic analysis of visual images;

4. The special case of the photograph;

5. Ideology and images;

6. Iconology and Iconography;

7. Engendered images;

8. Racial images;

9. The digital image;

10. Ownership of images.
