Writing and Art Theory

Examines the range of approaches to contemporary writing in the visual arts. Although the scope of the material included will be wide, including popular media texts, the emphasis will be on developing creative, speculative and innovative approaches to writing art theory.

ObjectivesOn successful completion of this course students will:

(1) acquire skills to critically analyse contemporary writing in the visual arts;

(2) develop an understanding of the interrelationships across research, writing and arts practice;

(3) refine and adapt writing and research skills toward developing innovative strategies.
ContentThe following topics will be developed:-

- Art criticism in the popular press

- Text as art

- The art catalogue

- Museums and art theory

- Writing art history

- Reading art theory

- Research for writing
