2-D Art: Colour and Experimental Media

Emphasises experimentation and exploration of contemporary ideas and technical approaches used across a range of two-dimensional art practices such as drawing, painting and printmaking. Independent thinking and problem solving of relevance to the contemporary practitioner is introduced.

Objectives1. To evaluate and consolidate practical skills in 2-D art;

2. To explore and develop experimental media within 2-D art as vehicles for the expression of ideas;

3. To commence studio-based research, and conceptual development and the study of creative solutions in a contemporary framework and related to the history and theory of 2-D art;

4. To promote group discussion of topics and themes presented for historical/critical analysis.
ContentEmphasis is placed on the development of individual student concepts within a framework of structured projects, specific studio methods and associated research relevant to various aspects of the syllabus:

Topics may include:
1. Composition, structure and approaches to the use of colour to painting, drawing and printmaking;

2. The use of appropriate imagery;

3. Experimentation in using 2-D art media;

4. Photographic and reprographic aids and techniques;

5. Representational and non-representational imagery;

6. Applications of diverse media and mixed-media;

7. Alternative supports and grounds;

8. Critical seminars of completed projects;

9. Compilation of studio journals and related sketchbooks;

10. Health and safety.
