Examines Australian art history from 1788 including traditional and contemporary art, using a range of interpretive frameworks. Students are given scope to develop a specialist interest encompassing traditional and contemporary practice.

Objectives On successful completion of this course students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate their knowledge of Australian Visual Culture
2. Demonstrate their understanding of the evolution of the fine arts on this continent
3. Demonstrate their understanding of the cultural context in which they work
Content The following themes will be developed:
- Colonialism and Nationalism
- Playing the field: Abstraction in Australian Art
- Site, spirit and identity: Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives
- Contemporary pluralism
- Provincialism and the global
- Art out of exile
- The new Pacific
