This course is restricted to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Teaching/Bachelor of Fine Art.

Supports and expands students introductory knowledge of Art History/Theory with an emphasis on the NSW secondary school curriculum. Students will develop the ability to apply interpretive theories to art objects and develop the skill to critically write about works of art and their historical contexturalisation.

Objectives

On successful completion of this course students will:
1. acquire an appreciation for the diversity and
function of all forms of visual imagery in
social and cultural context with application
to the Visual Art syllabuses.
2. Gain skills in research methodology related
to the visual arts.
3. Develop the ability to both critically
evaluate a given work of art, within its
cultural context
4. Attain skills that will enable them to
express informed analysis of artworks in
written form.

Content

. Methodology of art history and selected
theories of art and visual analysis.
. Core focus on the western tradition of visual
culture.
. Critical interpretation of art work in
cultural and historical context within a
framework of visual art study areas of art
history,art criticism and aesthetics.
