This course will underpin and work in conjunction with the Creative Practice courses for first year BFA students and will investigate primary issues confronting art in the twentieth century and twenty-first centuries. It will build on issues and themes begun in AART1100. It will address the historical rejection of the artistic values of Modernism, recent critical developments in Postmodernism and contemporary art. It will link both art historical narratives with broader cultural, philosophical and socio-political issues and themes.
| Objectives | On successful completion of this course students will: 1. gain appropriate skills in research methodology in art theory and history; 2. acquire knowledge of the cluster of theoretical concepts and art trends which characterised the Postmodern era as it is now historically defined, and introduce the global contemporary art field; 3. develop the ability to critically evaluate a given work of art, within its cultural context. 4. develop the ability to express informed analysis in written and verbal form. |
