This course will underpin and work in conjunction with the Creative Enquiry courses for first year BFA students and will investigate some of the primary issues confronting art in the twentieth century, including the development of modernism and modernity. This course will introduce a basic understanding of essential concepts such as abstraction, the rejection of the unique art object, the socio-political in art and the radical experimentation of the twentieth century. It will link both art historical narratives with broader cultural, philosophical and socio-political issues and themes
| Objectives | On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. demonstrate an understanding of major themes and issues in art history including the development of modernity. 2. demonstrate developed skills in the analysis of visual art and culture. 3. demonstrate developed skills in researching the visual arts. 4. demonstrate developed skills in communicating about visual arts, in both written and verbal forms. |

| Content | The course will cover fields such as the changing role of the artist in western culture; modernism and modernity; abstraction and the spiritual; political activism in the visual arts; the questioning of the unique object; the ‘white cube’; psychoanalysis, the body and the surreal; visuality and new technologies. | ||||||||
