Early Childhood Music Program

The Early Childhood music program provides children with opportunities to discover and develop a love and understanding of music. Children develop vocal, instrumental, aural and musical discrimination skills, through the use of enjoyable games, songs, moving, creating, listening and playing activities. Participation in a developmental music program during a child's early years enhances listening skills, concentration and academic ability, as well as social skills and self confidence.

The Conservatorium's music for children program provides a series of enjoyable, age appropriate musical experiences, from birth through to the age of nine years. Elements of Kodaly, Orff and Dalcroze are included. Classes are offered both in Newcastle and in Maitland.

Lessons for children aged 5 and under are held in the mornings, Monday to Friday. School age children attend after school. For information regarding the timetable please contact us on ph: 492 18900 or via email at conservatorium@newcastle.edu.au

Junior Instrument Program (JIP)

The Junior Instrumental Program is a 2 year program designed to cater for young students (from age 6 and up) with little or no previous musical experience.

Tuition is offered in a one hour class (length may be shorter depending on class numbers) in the keyboard studio.

During the first year of the JIP keyboard course children learn to listen, read, write and play music using the keyboard. Thorough training is given, progressing to more advanced music reading, rhythm and written musicianship skills.

The course offers children the opportunity to continue to build on the skills learnt in the first year. Students continue with more advanced reading and musicianship skills, technical competency, improvisation, transposition and aural training.

Class Times:

JIP 1: Monday 4:00pm

JIP 1: Wednesday 4:00pm

JIP 2: Wednesday 5:00pm

JIP 3: Monday 5:00pm

Future Junior Instrumental Programs

Other programs are being developed to cater for a broader range of instruments based on student enrolments. This may include strings, woodwind, brass and percussion.

Music Craft

The AMEB Music Craft course provides a highly stimulating process for students to gain important music theory skills and knowledge. Through this progression, students will gain vital skills and be tested from a listening perspective, all of which will benefit their written work and overall musical development and understanding.

The Conservatorium provides 1/2 hour to 3/4 hour classes for each Music Craft grade. The classes are organised according to genre and levels of ability from beginner to advanced students. Commencing at preliminary grade (level), Music Craft progresses through to grade six.
