Getting to Newcastle

Newcastle is located about 90 minutes North of Sydney via the F3 Freeway.

Road

From Sydney travel on the F3 Freeway for approximately 90 minutes. Take the Newcastle exit and it will take you all the way into the centre of the city.

Rail

Newcastle can be reached via the City Rail network from Central Station, Sydney along the Newcastle and Central Coast line. There are several return services that run each day including weekends.

Please refer to the City Rail web site for timetable information.

Please note: Trackwork is scheduled for the Newcastle and Central Coast line (evenings) from 28 November to 1st December. Buses will replace trains between Wyong and Newcastle.

Air

Newcastle Airport web site
Newcastle Airport is the major regional airport. It is located approximately 25 minutes north of Newcastle at Williamtown (about AU$35 in a taxi). Direct flights to Newcastle are available from Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Coffs Harbour and the Gold Coast, as well as some other regional centres.

Direct flights to Newcastle Airport from most capital cities in Australia are serviced by Jetstar, Qantas and Virgin Blue

Getting to the University

Car
The University of Newcastle is a bushland campus on University Drive at Callaghan, about a 20 minute drive from the City Centre.

Bus
The Maths Bus Stop (map reference M5) is next to the CT and GP Buildings where most of the conference sessions and presentations are scheduled.
The Design Bus Stop (map reference L8) is closest to Birabahn (Welcome reception), the on-campus accommodation and the Forum Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Newcastle Bus & Ferry Services - great maps, timetables and route information. Routes 100, 101, 103, 223, 225, 226, 227 & 104 travel via the University.

Train
It is possible to travel to the University of Newcastle via train (alight at Warabrook Station - map reference A19) There is approximately a 20 minute walk to the main conference locations.

Parking

Carpark No. 2 (Map reference N5) is closest to the conference locations on campus.

Parking on Campus - Machine Vended Day Permits, these casual daily parking permits are available from coin operated permit dispensers at a cost of AU$3.00. The dispensers are located at the entrances to the Callaghan Campus and in carparks on campus.

The machines take AU$2, AU$1, 50c, 20c & 10c coins.
The machines do not give change . Permits must be clearly displayed on the vehicle dashboard.

Campus shuttle bus

A campus wide shuttle bus service operates on weekday afternoons and evenings. A shuttle bus service will be provided on Saturday for delegates staying on campus.

Eating Out in Newcastle

For fantastic food, fabulous coffee and great shopping, try Newcastle's Darby Street precinct. Located 10 minutes walk from the heart of Newcastle, you will find a diverse range of cafes, restaurants and shops.

Another area famed for its cosmopolitan atmosphere is Beaumont Street, Hamilton. Located less than 10 minutes drive from the centre of Newcastle, Hamilton boasts a wide variety of cafes, restaurants and pubs.

On Campus

There are four residential Colleges that provide a variety of accommodation styles. Evatt house offers group rooms at excellent rates. Birahineban offers twin, single or double style accomodation.

Near the University

Executive Inn – 10 Rugby Road, New Lambton 4 ½ star hotel. The 225 bus travels to the University door to door.

Best Western Travelers Motor Village - 295 Maitland Road, Mayfield. A range of motel rooms, cabins, family apartments, self contained rooms and deluxe spa rooms from AUAU$71 - AU$162. Deluxe rooms are AU$170 per night and Terrace Spa Suites at AU$200 per night. The 100, 103 and 104 buses travel to the University.


In the city

Crowne Plaza Hotel Newcastle - Cnr Merewether St & Wharf Rds, Newcastle. City Side Suites - AU$165.00 room only. Harbourside Suites - AU$185.00 room only.
Additional charges - full breakfast served in breeze RESTAURANT & BAR can be arranged prior to arrival for AU$22.00 per person, per day, when not arranged the rate is AU$26.50. Hotel car parking is a valet service this is AU$12.00 per vehicle, per night.

Ibis Newcastle - 700 Hunter St, Newcastle.
Rates will be AU$119.00 room only per room on the Friday and Saturday.
