Glen Avery Memorial Scholarship Fund

Glen Avery

Glen Avery's unrivalled energy and enthusiasm for helping others is legendary. During 20 years of outstanding service to the University of Newcastle, he touched the lives of many.To honour Glen's spirit of giving, the University has established the Glen Avery Memorial Scholarship Fund. Glen will be remembered for the care and service he provided to colleagues, students, their families and members of the community with whom he interacted.

During his many years at the University he worked in a variety of roles, including human resources, alumni relations, the management of scholarships and prizes, advising prospective students, and as a team leader in the Enquiry Centre. These roles reflected Glen's love of people and his commitment to service. Even in difficult times, Glen's dedication to service provision never wavered and his generous, if sometimes quirky, spirit always supported others.

Glen enjoyed a long and diverse involvement in musical theatre. His first foray was with the New Life Singers where he made many enduring friendships and cut his teeth on acting and singing. Throughout the years, Glen appeared in a range of musicals including favourites such as Guys and Dolls, Les Miserables, Joseph and His Technicolour Dreamcoat, The Sound of Music, Annie, and My Fair Lady.

When not on stage, he would contribute tirelessly behind the scenes organising props, painting sets and rehearsing lines with actors.Glen set foot on stage for the last time in December 2007, covering the role of Butterworth in Club 71's production of Dracula.

To recognise Glen's passion for the arts, his family, friends and colleagues have established a Scholarship Fund in his honour.

Glen was a proud advocate of higher education, and it is hoped the fund will provide for a perpetual scholarship to support a worthy student in the area of the performing arts each year.

This scholarship is a fitting way to celebrate and remember the life of a special individual who enriched the lives of those who knew him. The scholarship will enable Glen's spirit of caring and service to others to endure in perpetuity.
