Flying under the radar
Emeritus Professor Alan Roberts has been sharing the gift of education at the University of Newcastle for more than 30 years and now former students would like to say thank you.
Bachelor of Engineering graduate Mr CHOO Heng Thong has established the Professor Alan Roberts Undergraduate Scholarship in Engineering to honour the years of dedication Professor Roberts has given to the University.
The initial funding for the scholarship has been provided by Mr CHOO and he has invited former students of Professor Roberts and of the University to continue to make further contributions to the fund in order to ensure its perpetuity.
For 20 years Professor Roberts was Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Chair of Industrial Engineering, offering his leadership and friendship to students at the University.
Professor Roberts said that he felt humbled by Mr CHOO's gesture and was thankful for his generous gift to the University and its students.
"I'm honoured to have my name attached to this scholarship but really, the honour should go to CHOO. It's his generosity that's going to provide opportunities for so many future students.
"Professor Roberts also believes that the scholarship is a great way to recognise students who sometimes fly under the radar at university and don't always get the support they need.
"The focus on education has become increasingly about the outcome and not the substance. Giving a scholarship to a student is a way for us to recognise their hidden potential."
