The University Art Collection

The University Art Collection comprises of over 1,000 art works that have been acquired, mainly by donation, since the University of Newcastle was founded in the 1960s.  The collection reflects the best of both regional and national work and features artists such as Charles Blackman, John Coburn, Margaret Preston, Judy Cassab, and John Olsen and Margaret Olley − both recipients of an Honorary Doctorate from the University in recognition of their contribution to Australian art and our region.

The collection continues to grow with a focus on acquiring works that reflect artistic production from our region and its people, our staff and our students.  The collection also continues to focus on national contemporary artists who intersect with our community and artists from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, which are collected through donations and featured exhibitions held in collaboration with our Wollotuka Institute.

University staff are able to apply for work to be installed in work and public areas. See more information and request an art installation.
