About us

In 2012 the Conservatorium celebrated 60 years of music education in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley region.

From its humble beginnings in huts in Civic Park, "the Con" now boasts state of the art concert and teaching facilities located in the Newcastle City Precinct.

Harold Lobb Concert Hall The Harold Lobb Concert Hall is a premier facility, which is in constant demand for concerts by local, interstate and international artists. This 400 seat concert hall is also available for University staff and students, as well as members of the public to hire for private functions. Additionally, our creative production, recording and computer labs are available for all types of classes.

As well as providing lessons in classical music performance, we open our doors to all styles of music. You can often hear rock, jazz, pop, folk and electronic sounds emanating from our buildings.

Our staff are experts in their field. Whether you want to learn an instrument, take classes in music reading and writing or join one of our community ensembles, we will facilitate your music needs.

We also welcome all members of the community to come and enjoy our concerts. Revel in the experience of live music, see outstanding national and international artists, or support our locally-grown talent.

This is your Conservatorium and we want you to be part of our musical heritage and future.

The Conservatorium has only two very small car parks both of which are available only to University of Newcastle students and staff and only to those cars displaying the requisite sticker and permit. Cars illegally parked will be infringed by University Security. There are however several adjacent five minute drop-off zones to facilitate student access.

Campus Security can be contacted from the blue security phones in the foyer and on the ground floor or for emergency calls on (02) 492 15888

A uniformed security guard patrols the city precinct of the University between 3:00pm and 11:00pm.
