The Social and Cultural Conflict Research Group is a part of the School of Humanities and Social Science at Newcastle University. The Group’s aim is to advance the study of cultural conflict within a broad inter-disciplinary context.

Research

Research undertaken by members of the Group includes military, political, foreign political, legal, cultural and social aspects of conflict. Conflict, for the purposes of the Group, is defined in the broadest sense.

Activities

The Social and Cultural Conflict Research Group is one of the most active research groupings at the university of Newcastle. Its members are frequently called on by the local and national media, as well as other universities, and some government departments. Seminars and conferences on topics of current importance to the Group’s research are regularly held.

Since its inception in 2000, the Group has organized a number of workshops and conferences and has supported a number of Visiting Scholars. Recently, the emphasis of the Group’s work has been on massacre studies, with the organisation of two workshops planned for 2008 and 2009. :

Participation in the Group’s activities

Participation in the Group’s activities is not limited to members of the University of Newcastle. Other interested professionals with similar research interests are more than welcome to contact us. .
