Welcome Indigenous Researchers

Umulliko has made significant contributions to the current debate on Indigenous theoretical perspectives and research methodologies nationally and internationally. We hosted the first annual 'Indigenous Researchers Forum' in 1999. This forum focused on Indigenous theoretical approaches and methodologies. Umulliko takes an Indigenous World View approach to research.

In any consideration, we (Indigenous Australians) are not 'Other'. We are at the centre of our own lives and our own history, and we need to give primacy to that position. We stand in relation to the mainstream but we do not have to view that relationshi as secondary to it, as it has been inscribed in the corpus of Western Disciplines.
(Nakata 1999:3) (Nakata in Tauchi, 2000, Segment 4.3.1)

The Forum has been designed to encourage honest and rigorous discussions, to canvass a diverse array of opinion and to develop future strategies through the development of Action Plans.

Objectives of the Forum:

  • For Indigenous researchers to actively reflect on and engage in issues involving and impacting on Indigenous research;
  • To create the opportunity and the space for Indigenous researchers to get together in a culturally safe environment;
  • To provide a forum for Indigenous post-graduate students to meet and discuss issues of relevance to them;
  • To explore innovative and creative culturally appropriate expressions of research outcomes.

Target Audience:

Indigenous Researchers including:

  • Staff from Indigenous Key Research Centres;
  • Staff from Indigenous Support Centres;
  • Indigenous Post-graduate students;
  • Indigenous Community representatives;
  • Indigenous representatives from corporate and government domains actively engaged in research

Anticipated Outcomes:

  • Stimulated network of Indigenous researchers
  • Constructive feedback on research project
  • People having an awesome experience!
