The Newcastle region is one of the most rapidly changing regions in the country. The University of Newcastle has a long record of quality research and teaching in the natural and built environment and innovative approaches to understanding the interactions of people with the environment.

The Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment has been established to draw this expertise together and to engage with the community in an integrated way while coordinating a whole of University approach.

This engagement of the University's expertise with the region's environmental, social and economic needs is critical for the maintenance and repair of environmental assets and the implementation of sustainable development strategies to accommodate and employ the growing population.
