Family Action Centre News: May 2007

Dad and sonWelcome to the first issue of our electronic newsletter. In each issue we'll feature the events, publications and good-news stories that make working with families and communities such a rewarding experience.
In this issue we've turned the spotlight on the inspiring and successful Stepping Stones project, the forthcoming Boys to Fine Men conference, and the tenth anniversary of the Boys in Schools Bulletin.

cactusSome of you may remember a time when boyswork was the cutting edge in education. How things have changed! Working with boys is now an accepted core activity in schools, but where exactly is the research at in 2007? The fifth biennial "Working with boys, building fine men" conference looks at current research and practice, under the theme "Stories of Success".

This year's conference (at the University of Newcastle, NSW, from 4-6 July) features several international speakers. Michael Gurian, from the USA, will discuss the hard science of boys' brains. New scanning technology and genome mapping is shedding light on how male and female brains work differently in different situations. Michael blows the old essentialist nature-versus-nurture argument out of the water; his presentation will really get people thinking and talking. Melvyn Davis, from the UK, will offer an inspirational presentation on the award-winning boys2MEN project, which mixes sport, music, visual arts and life experience to re-engage at-risk boys. And Australia's own Andrew Fuller will show you how to "bungy jump through the pitfalls of life" on the Milestones to Manhood. A copy of the 12-page pre-conference program can be downloaded from the FAC site. To register, go to conference organiser Tulips Management's site.

rock water logoThe dates for October and November's Rock & Water workshops are now listed on our website; go to the Rock & Water workshops page of the Family Action Centre website and download a PDF copy of the registration form. It might seem a little early, but places on the March and April tour were booked out quickly, so don't miss out on the opportunity to work with the wonderful Freerk Ykema.

Kids at CooranbongThis year sees the continuation of the Caravan Project's "Stepping Stones" program. Stepping Stones helps children from caravan parks in their transition from park to school; in this case, from Freemans Waterhole Caravan Park to Cooranbong Public School in NSW.

The program began in 2006 with funding from the Telstra Foundation, but 2007 has seen it really take off. For a report from project coordinator Dee Brooks, simply follow the Stepping Stones.

bulletinIn 2007 the Boys in Schools Bulletin celebrates its first decade. Working on boys’ educational issues was very much a niche activity when the Family Action Centre published its first issue in 1996.

The Bulletin is now available in hard copy and CD-ROM format. Many schools order a combination of the two: the hard copy for the staff room and the CD-ROM version posted on the school's intranet. Don't forget that PDFs of previous years' Bulletins are available free from the Family Action Centre website. To subscribe or to download PDFs, simply go to the Boys in Schools Bulletin page of our website.
