Terrestrial Research

The Earth and Ocean Science Research Group conducts research into terrestrial sequence stratigraphy and correlation between terrestrial and marine sediments. To conduct this research we have used organic sediments (particularly coal) to provide a record of accommodation changes in terrestrial settings. We have investigated a range of terrestrial sedimentary basins in the Sydney Basin Australia, the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin and the Book Cliffs in Utah to examine a spectrum of accommodation and the resulting terrestrial stratigraphy. We have conducted extensive fieldwork studying outcrop, borehole, and wireline log data and supplemented this with detailed petrographic analyses to establish terrestrial to marine correlations, and to understand the response of terrestrial sediments to changes in accommodation. Results have been generated in all three basins leading to a new understanding of terrestrial sequence stratigraphy.
