Who needs to study International Foundation?

International students who do not have the academic qualification to gain direct undergraduate admission can qualify for admission to a degree program through their studies in IF. To be eligible for IF, students need to have completed at least 10 years of schooling.

What is the advantage in doing the International Foundation program?

Students undertake courses that will provide them with specific preparation for various undergraduate programs. The program is located and taught on the main campus of the University of Newcastle, and thus provides both academic and environmental orientation advantages for international students.

What is the commencement and duration of International Foundation?

International Foundation is generally a one-year program consisting of 80 units of study over two semesters, with commencements in March and July each year. A one-semester program for A level or advanced students (AEP) is also offered, commencing in November each year.

What course structures/choices are available in International Foundation?

Students study courses which relate to their preferred undergraduate degree program. They are placed into one of the four pathway programs:  Health Sciences/Medicine, Engineering/Science/IT, Business/Law/Commerce or Education/Arts. All students enrol in two English for Tertiary Studies courses and six other preparatory courses.

What is involved in the International Foundation Health Sciences/Medical pathway?

The IF Health Sciences pathway is designed to specifically prepare International students for study in a variety of Health Science undergraduate programs. A specific Health Studies course, incorporating problem based learning, is a core component of this IF pathway.

What is the English Language proficiency level required to study in International Foundation?

An IELTS score of 5.5 (with no band less than 5.0) or a TOEFL score of 500 (CBT 173) is required.

What does International Foundation cost to study?

In 2009, the tuition fees will be AUD $15,000.

What Average Mark (AM) will I need to achieve in International Foundation?

IF students are assessed for undergraduate admission based on their Average Mark (AM) over 80 units of study.  Students need to achieve a minimum AM of 55 to successfully complete IF. The AM required for admission to individual degree programs varies from 55 to 90 and examples of various undergraduate degrees and the required AMs can be found in the IF brochure.

Is Guardianship and Homestay available for students under 18 years?

In accordance with the ESOS Act, the University of Newcastle organises accommodation with a Homestay host family for IF students who are under 18 years of age, and ensures appropriate welfare arrangements including the provision of an appointed University Guardian.

Is student welfare/support provided in International Foundation?

A wide range of student support services, advice and assistance is provided within IF and across the University student support facilities.
