 Projects:

Understanding Sydney's changing role as a global city in the Australian urban and regional network

Research tasks: Mapping of the changing linkages generated by Sydney's economy, and their consequent impacts.   To date, this project has developed a new mapping technique that represents volume flows on a map (e.g. freight flows and financial flows).  This new mapping technique has been incorporated into other projects for the Centre.

TUNRA Urban Research Development Project

Research tasks: Processing and analysis of ABS data including Census, SEIFA, Household Travel Survey, Journey to Work data and population and household projections.  Data analysis also undertaken and represented using mapping technology.

Building technologies and engagement processes for using spatialised data to enhance family and community outcomes in a region experiencing major change

Research tasks:

The writing of a report on Children in the Hunter and Children and Disadvantage in the Hunter involved the processing and analysis of Census Data.  Communities within the Hunter Region were profiled and discussed at length regarding their socio-economic and demographic characteristics.  An investigation into communities at risk of disadvantage was conducted using key indicators of vulnerability and disadvantage.  Further qualitative data was obtained to produce a comprehensive tool used in policy and decision making within the Hunter Region.

GIS Policy Training Workshops

The workshop series provided technical training in MapInfo Professional relevant to the human services sector.  Training was combined with policy discussions to help participants understand the mapping and GIS outcomes they had just produced, and how such outcomes can be used effectively within their work.  Training was based on current data sets and based on the Hunter Region.  Specific techniques such as importing their own agency data, and analysis of this were taught.  Users also learnt how to add, display, create, edit, query, manipulate and analyse spatial data.

Exploring the relationships between retail access to tobacco, socio-economic status and tobacco consumption

Research Tasks: Tobacco outlets (sourced from the Yellow Pages) were given X-Y co-ordinates using the MapInfo geocoding tool.  Results were then analysed comparing outlet density and distribution with the socio-economic status of areas, the proximity to other facilities such as schools, the density relative to other services and the catchment areas, in terms of the distance people were prepared to travel to purchase tobacco.

Industrial Development and Economic Leakage in the Dungog Shire LGA

Research Tasks:

A business survey was conducted within Dungog Shire and results were analysed using SPSS Statistical software.  Analysis involved cross-tabulations, descriptive statistics and graphical and tabular output that highlighted key patterns and trends within Dungog Shire’s businesses.  Journey-to-work data were also analysed and represented visually within this project, in addition to RTA traffic flows to help understand the economic and business flows within the Shire.  Analysis of the implications of the current zoning and infrastructure was also conducted.

Neighbourhood resources in inner Newcastle: social mix and neighbourhood networks in Hamilton South

Research Tasks:

SPSS was used to better understand the survey responses of residents of Hamilton South (public/ private renters, home purchasers and owners).

Analysis involved cross-tabulations, descriptive statistics and graphical and tabular output that highlighted key patterns and trends.

Public Housing in Inner Newcastle: Gentrifying Neighbourhoods and Social Mix

Research Tasks:

SPSS was used to better understand the survey responses of residents of Inner Newcastle Public Housing tenants.  Analysis involved cross-tabulations, descriptive statistics and graphical and tabular output that highlighted key patterns and trends.

Effective public housing management strategies for rural and regional Australia

Research Tasks:

A series of Local Area Social Housing Plans (LASHs) and Local Area Plans (LAPs) were written in conjunction with the NSW Department of Housing.  These reports involved fieldwork, consultations and focus groups to collect qualitative and quantitative data on the properties and the current social housing provision in the area, and the analysis of property records to assist with asset management.  Tenant information was also analysed to help provide an understanding of the tenant profile and their housing needs.  Additional census analysis was conducted to provide a demographic and socio-economic understanding of the area containing the public housing.  The available social and physical infrastructure was also audited to determine if public housing tenants were under serviced.

A gap analysis was also produced to help guide the Northern Division of the NSW Department of Housing with their asset planning.  Projections of the population and household/ family composition was one part of this 30 year guide, which aimed to help determine the size, location and degree of public housing need from the Hawkesbury River to Tweed Heads.
