If we applied all that we already know about cancer, that is if we were all ‘cancer smart’ – didn’t smoke, ate a healthy diet, protected ourselves from the sun and had regular checkups – we could reduce the number of cancer deaths in NSW by half.

The Centre for Health Research & Psycho-oncology (CHeRP) is a behavioural research group established in 1988 with funding from the Cancer Council NSW  and is based within the Faculty of HealthUniversity of Newcastle

CHeRP’s mission is to undertake the highest quality research and relevant training in order to contribute to a reduction in the burden of illness imposed by cancer. Our research focus is on:

 Track Record

 

CHeRP has a proven track record of undertaking behavioural research of the highest quality, reflected by the 243 publications in refereed journals; 6 book chapters; 2,546 citations of CHeRP research in peer-reviewed journal articles; over $11.6 million of external funding, in addition to the $10.9 million of Cancer Council program funding; 27 postgraduate students trained (23 PhD and 4 Masters); and representation on prestigious and strategic local, state and national committees and working groups between 1988 and 2008.

Dr Claire Johnson awarded her PhD for Palliative Care Research

CHeRP researcher Claire Johnson was awarded her PhD in 2007 for researching practices relating to the referral of patients with advanced cancer to specialist palliative care services.  Her thesis is titled ‘Palliative care in Australia: Perceptions and practices of cancer specialists and general practitioners’.

NHMRC Awards
