Quality in health care

Associate Professor Robert Gibberd

NSW Health Department has adopted a ‘Framework for Quality’ in which clinical indicators are to be used to monitor the quality of care. The Health Services Research Group (HSRG) is providing reports on the safety and appropriateness indicators that can be derived from the NSW in-patient data collection. The results have been presented to each Area Health Service, and over 40 quality improvement projects started. Robert Gibberd is on the NSW Health Implementation Committee for this project.

Two clinical areas have been selected to study appropriateness: cataracts and cholysystectomy. A literature review and documentation of the magnitude of the associated risks for these procedures is being carried out.
