Qualitative Research Laboratory

The primary purpose of the Qualitative Research Laboratory (QRL) is to facilitate the successful completion of qualitative research projects undertaken by staff and students of the Faculty of Health at the University of Newcastle. We also offer our services to other clients within and beyond the University, and do not limit our services to those in health related fields only.

Services. Staff can assist with designing and developing projects in many ways. Suggestions about how to make sure your data can answer the questions you want it to, data collection methods, and the skills needed to successfully conduct and tape record interviews are some of the preliminary things you could discuss with staff. Your level of experience with qualitative work will determine the help you need to design your project. Later on, we can help with teaching you how to code qualitative data and qualitative methods of interpretation. Whether you want help regularly through out the conduct of your project, or you just want to spend a few hours going over a particular skill which is new to you, we can help. The level and type of assistance you choose is up to you. Some of the services offered by the QRL are:

Access to Qualitative Resources
Access to QRL library of resources for qualitative projects - free service

Qualitative Software Training
Basic and intensive training In qualitative data analysis software use is available for individuals and groups

Transcription Services
Transcription of interview tapes, meetings, etc

Qualitative Research Project Assistance
Staff assistance with qualitative research projects. For example, research design, coding formulation development and application, research instrument development etc

Focus Group Co-facilitation
Help with the facilitation of focus groups to obtaining qualitative research data

Cost. QRL services are free to non-grant funded members of the faculty. Pricing schedule varies with organisation placement and funding arrangements for the project, although generally the closer the relationship with the CCEB, the more we can subsidise pricing. External users should be aware though that our services are competitively priced vis a vis current market rates.
