Barton Lecture
The Barton Lecture, first presented by the University of Newcastle in 2008 was established to explore Australian politics and constitutional issues. The lecture is held to honour Sir Edmund Barton, one of the founding fathers of the Constitution and the first Prime Minister of Australia who was elected to the seat of Hunter in 1901.

Malcolm Turnbull is a member of the House of Representatives and is currently Shadow Minister for Communications and Broadband. He was Leader of the Opposition from 16 September 2008 to 1 December 2009 and prior to that Shadow Treasurer. An Arts/Law graduate, Mr Turnbull was a Rhodes Scholar who also went on to take a further law degree at Oxford. He has reached the pinnacle of several fields - the law, journalism, finance - and has brought his influence and intelligence to bear on a variety of civic concerns.
