Annual Report 2012

The UnAnnual Report 2012 coveriversity of Newcastle Annual Report 2012 was submitted to the Minister for Education, the Honourable Adrian Piccoli MP on 30 April 2013 for presentation to Parliament. 

The Annual Report summarises the work and activities of the University for the year ended 31 December 2012. The Annual Report and the accompanying audited Financial Statements have been prepared in accordance with the Annual Reports (Statutory Bodies) Act 1984 and the Public Finance and Audit Act 1983.

The University is a leader in the delivery of innovative work and research-integrated learning experiences. In 2012, we launched more cutting-edge technology, including Australia's first radiation therapy simulator, to enable the delivery of world-class education.

In 2012, the University ranked in the top 3 per cent of universities in the world and a number of our researchers were recognised for outstanding achievement.

Indigenous collaboration

The University is recognised as a national leader in Indigenous education with almost double the number of who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander than the sector average. In 2012, close to half of our Indigenous students were enrolled in the professional disciplines, including teaching, nursing, social work and engineering.

Our staff, students and alumni contribute to our regions, both in Australia and across the world. By engaging with our partners in industry, business and government, in 2012 we continued to deliver world-class research and innovation to support the development of strong communities both socially and economically.

Our environment

Quality environments support the University's goal of providing an innovative and rewarding student experience. We are committed to sustainability and are a sector leader in low energy consumption and water usage. Our efforts in waste management prevented approximately 200,000 kilograms of waste from going to landfill in 2012.
