Doubling our student accommodation

An exciting new development is underway that will almost double on-campus student accommodation at the Newcastle campus at Callaghan.

The two-year project to build four contemporary, multi-level apartment complexes will deliver an additional 778 beds to meet the high demand for affordable on-campus accommodation. The development will bring the total number of beds on campus to 1,700.

The buildings will complement the unique bushland setting and have been designed in line with industry best-practice environmental principles.

The new development is part of a $100 million investment in student accommodation, which includes refurbishments to existing residences and additional parking for residence.

The contract for the building project was awarded to John Holland Group in December 2012 and site preparation began in January 2013. Construction will take about two years, with the first students scheduled to move in in early 2015.

The building was designed by Architectus, an industry leader in student accommodation, education-sector architecture and sustainable design.

The development of the residential precinct is a major infrastructure project for the University and the Hunter region that will create up to 350 jobs during construction.
